Light Dragoon Riding Standards
In order to participate as a mounted dragoon the following assessment must be passed whilst carrying a sabre and, if used, a carbine and pistols.
- Mount and dismount without assistance whilst carrying full kit and weapons.
- Adjust tack to correctly fit the horse and yourself. Know the correct fit of a saddle and bit.
- Ride in formation and show an ability to understand and obey cavalry commands.
- Have control of the horse at all paces.
- Ride a horse confidently and with an independent seat with reins in one hand at all paces.
- Ride figures without stirrups at the walk, trot and canter.
- Use the correct aids for basic movements: walk, trot and canter, turns and circles, leg yield, transitions, halt and stand still.
- Ride in balance up and down hills at all paces.
-
No one is allowed to take to the re-enactment battlefield as cavalry unless he/she has demonstrated these abilities during training. We fully support and will help anyone to achieve these standards.
Riding a horse in 'battle' is hard work and unlike any other sort of riding experience, but the rewards are without compare.
